No-Deal Brexit – Rights as a UK national living abroad

With the deadline for the UK leaving the EU fast approaching, and the chances of a no-deal exit ever-increasing, it’s really important to know where UK citizens living abroad stand if we do leave without a deal.

There’s plenty of guidance online, and we thought we would compile some summary snippets for UK citizens living in EU, EEA & EFTA countries.

EU Countries:

Austria

Belgium

Bulgaria

Croatia

Republic of Cyprus

Czech Republic

Denmark

Estonia

Finland

France

Germany

Greece

Hungary

Ireland

Italy

Latvia

Lithuania

Luxembourg

Malta

Netherlands

Poland

Portugal

Romania

Slovakia

Slovenia

Spain

Sweden

EEA & EFTA Countries:

Iceland

Liechtenstein

Norway

Switzerland

The UK has reached an agreement with the EEA EFTA states to protect citizens’ rights in a no deal scenario.

This agreement upholds the Prime Minister’s commitment from October 2018 that the rights of UK citizens in the EEA EFTA countries as well as those of EEA EFTA citizens living in the UK would be protected in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

This will provide EEA EFTA nationals in the UK and UK nationals in the EEA EFTA states with certainty about their rights going forward, ensuring that they can continue living their lives broadly as they do now.

If you’re an EU citizen living in the United Kingdom, you can find more information here.
