Lead 2D Artist – Multi-Platform – Essex

The Lead Artist will manage a small team of talented artists, working closely with the Creative Director, production team and all departmental leads to achieve the shared project aspirations.

 

With this position comes great responsibility to further develop the existing team, always ensuring high-quality output within strict timescales. The Lead Artist will be an experienced 2D artist, but will also have, and continue to develop, technical expertise in this field; working closing with representatives of the technical and design team to establish art solutions for game features and suitable implementation processes for the art team.

 

As the Lead Artist, your role is to plan, organise, follow-up and evaluate work produced by the art team. You will also be expected to contribute to the art itself, creating production quality assets to be used within the game(s).

 

Key Role Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the art team in the creation of high-quality environments and 2D production assets for use in game
  • Encourage creativity and participation from all team members
  • Share knowledge and recommend best practices
  • Provide regular reviews (both formally and informally) and feedback on work produced by the team
  • Work closely with the Game Producer to schedule and time cost work to be undertaken by the art team
  • Work collaboratively with feature teams and dependent departments to investigate and establish art solutions
  • Actively drive and participate in the continuous improvement work associated with processes and pipelines
  • Create and maintain project documentation/reference material for use by the art team

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Extensive experience in the games industry
  • Examples of strong 2D work/portfolio (experience in 3D is also desirable)
  • At a minimum, experience of one full development cycle (from pre-production to shipped title on PC/Console)
  • Strong verbal, visual and written communication skills
  • Ability to work directly with a Creative Director and/or Art Director to translate their vision into actionable tasks and content
  • Experience in team leadership and management
  • Strong organisational skills; including ability to multi-task, work to deadlines, plan and prioritise own workload and the that of others
  • Great problem-solving skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Unity game engine (experience of other engines is also desirable)
  • Excellent knowledge in Photoshop and/or other equivalent packages
